Kanda Shasti Kavasam is a hymn dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Skanda, Subramanya, or Kartikeya. It is believed to have been composed in the 19th century by Devaraya Swamigal, a revered Tamil poet and devotee of Lord Murugan. The hymn consists of six parts or kandams, each of which is further divided into several stanzas. It is chanted to seek the blessings of Lord Murugan and for protection from evil forces, illnesses, and obstacles in life.
The hymn describes Lord Murugan’s various attributes, including his valor, beauty, wisdom, and benevolence. It also praises his consorts, Valli and Deivayanai, and seeks their blessings.
Kanda Shasti Kavasam is widely recited during the six-day festival of Skanda Shasti, which falls in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October-November). It is believed that chanting the hymn with devotion and faith can bestow numerous benefits, including spiritual upliftment, good health, success, and prosperity.
